What type of organization is the Coalition for a Better Memphis?
The CBM is a 501(c)(4) tax-exempt non-profit organization as identified by the Internal Revenue Service. 501(c)(4)s are non-profit organizations that promote social welfare. As a 501(c)(4), the primary goal of the CBM is to educate voters by providing objective, un-biased and non-partisan information on candidates running for public office in Memphis and Shelby County.
The CBM is not affiliated in any way with any corporation, political action committee, or political party.
How is the Coalition for a Better Memphis funded?
The CBM receives membership dues from each member organization. Membership is divided into three main categories: Business members, which includes corporations, LLCs, partnerships and sole proprietorships that have a presence in or conduct business in Shelby County; Organization members, which include trade associations or other groups that are not 501(c)(3) organizations and that serve Shelby County; and Contributing members, which are 501(c)(3) organizations and individual citizens. The cost to be a member depends on the type of organization and the size of the business.
The CBM will not accept contributions from candidates, political parties, political leadership political action committees (PACs), or any other partisan entity.

What is the motivation for businesses and organizations to become members of the Coalition for a Better Memphis?
Businesses understand that government impacts every aspect of their ability to do business - from the quality of life of the company's employees to the local economic environment to the economic development climate and the ability of the area to attract new business and jobs. Because government has such a large and comprehensive impact, businesses understand that they must be involved in the political process.
Government often enacts legislation and regulations that governs industries that the elected officials know nothing about. While the CBM does not in any way, shape, or form lobby elected officials, the goal of the CBM is to educate voters so that intelligent, highly-qualified candidates are elected to local office.
Which elections is the Coalition for a Better Memphis involved in?
The CBM focuses only on City of Memphis and County-wide elections (City of Memphis Mayor, Memphis City Council, Memphis City Schools Board of Education, Shelby County Mayor, Shelby County Commission, Shelby County Schools Board of Education, Sherriff, Assessor, Trustee, Court Clerk, etc). The CBM does not participate in federal, state, or local municipal (i.e. Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, etc.) elections.
